Spider Control

Spider Control

Do you have arachnophobia, or a fear of spiders? If you live in central Florida and hate spiders, you may have a problem. But the truth is, you have nothing to fear when it comes to many of the spiders you’ll come across in Florida. On the other hand, you should steer clear of a few poisonous types. So, how can you tell which is which?

What Types of Spiders Will You Find in Central Florida?

Spiders that Florida residents often encounter include the Funnel Weaver — also known as the Domestic House Spider or Tegenaria domestica — the False Black Widow (Steatoda borealis), the Wolf Spider (Lycosidae spp.), the Brown Recluse (Loxosceles reclusa) and the Black Widow (Latrodectus spp.)

What Are Some Characteristics of Spiders in Central Florida?

Naturally, the most critical characteristic of spiders you will be interested in is whether they are poisonous. The main spiders you will want to watch out for in this regard are the Brown Recluse and the Black Widow:

  • Black Widows: Female Black Widows have a red hourglass shape on a black body or red spots on the underside of their abdomen. Males are brown or dark gray with a yellow or white hourglass.
  • Brown Recluses: The Brown Recluse is light or dark brown with a violin shape on the back. Some do not have the violin marking, but all brown recluses have only three pairs of eyes as opposed to eight eyes.

The non-venomous False Black Widow does not have the red hourglass and is more brown than black. Meanwhile, Funnel Weavers look something like brown recluses but have eight eyes and are hairy. Wolf spiders look like Funnel Weavers but do not spin webs.

How Can Spiders in Central Florida Hurt You?

As you probably realize, venomous spiders can indeed hurt you. Black widow and brown recluse venom are both highly toxic. If one of these spiders bites you, seek medical treatment immediately. Other spiders could potentially bite you, but while the bite may be mildly painful, it should generally be otherwise harmless. Few spiders are at all interested in biting humans and will usually only do so if aggressively provoked.
