It would be quite rare for you to have a home in central Florida without encountering an ant. Ants are a common part of the ecosystem, and most Florida ants are relatively harmless — although you wouldn’t necessarily want them infesting your lawn or invading your home.
Fire ants, however, are a very different story. If you discover fire ants in or around your home, take protective measures as soon as possible.
The type of fire ant you will want to be on the lookout for in and around your central Florida home is the red imported fire ant, or Solenopsis invicta. These ants are about a quarter-inch long and reddish brown with shiny, dark abdomens. They are quite distinctive from other Florida ants thanks in part to the two bumps that appear between the thorax and abdomen.
Unlike most other Florida ants — like small brown ants such as the meadow ant or pavement ant — fire ants can do a lot of damage to your lawn. Other ants tend to make small, innocuous nests that are barely noticeable, but fire ants make giant mounds when it rains to prevent themselves from being overwhelmed by groundwater. These mounds can seriously ruin the appearance of your lawn.
Worse yet, unlike other ants, fire ants sting when threatened, and their bites are extremely unpleasant and painful. If your pet or child runs afoul of a fire ant hill, they may be bitten and stung many times, causing intense pain.
